— CHAPTER SEVENTEEN —

“WHY DID THE SOFT TOY

SKIP DESSERT?”

“Because it was stuffed!”

Hobo stared at the plastic toy. Why on earth did Dad buy it for him? How insensitive of him, especially after Billy had treated him so badly. First, Lucy’s shocking change in behaviour and now his own family acting strangely. What was going on?

Hobo stared at the facsimile once again. It seemed to dominate its surroundings. The fixed grin and the little piggy black eyes unnerved Hobo. He felt like the creature was interrogating him through its fixed stare. Hobo slowly walked towards the plastic figure. Unnaturally, it felt as if the room had darkened and the air was hot and still. Logic dictated to Hobo that this atmospheric disturbance could only be in his mind. This led him to just one conclusion – he was afraid. Very afraid!

The resemblance to the puppet character was skillfully reproduced. The domed head, in the shape of a monstrously enlarged brain, shone when it caught the light. From certain angles the head looked a bit like a bare bum. Normally, this thought would have made him and Lucy laugh out loud, but right now humour was the last thing on Hobo’s mind.

The mouth was stretched into a grotesque parody of a smile. It reminded Hobo of some particularly grisly photos he had seen of World War One soldiers after a gas attack. Their lips pulled back, revealing their teeth in a terrifying leer.

Hobo leaned in, determined to investigate the toy. His eyes were dragged to the row of white teeth chiselled into threatening, fine points. How could this possibly be a suitable children’s toy? Hobo imagined the bite marks that these teeth could make. Red, sore, circular tracks left in soft, pink flesh. The black eyes of the creature seemed soulless, empty and dead. Hobo felt a shudder down his spine, as a bead of perspiration fell from his forehead. He was scared. He wanted to turn his face away from the vile ugliness before him, but he was held frozen in its stare.

Just then the toy fell forward! Hobo hurled himself backwards with a scream! He lay there for a moment as his heart pounded in his chest.

Logic told Hobo that the toy had just slipped, but blind panic gave a different answer. As Hobo looked at the creature that lay on his floor – the smile seemed wider.

Then Hobo heard Billy Bandril’s voice.

Thankfully, it came not from the creature, but from his brother’s bedroom next door. Gav was watching the creature on YouTube, roaring with laughter. Hobo was puzzled. Gav had never shown the remotest interest in The Billy Bandril Show. Hobo looked down at the grinning plastic figure and asked himself a question.

Something is not right in the state of Denmark, thought Hobo.
